Where I'm From
a poem by Michelle Perria
I am from 228
N. Monroe Street
I am from chasing one blind and one deaf dachshund
I am from The Dentist Office Parking Lot,
Where we rode bikes from the last car ‘till the bats came out and
We played dangerous feats of King of the Mountain.
I am from “Let’s Go Voltron Force” and “Thundercats, GO!”
I am from belly smackers on the Wet Banana and Spy Kits with Huey Dewey, and Louie.
I am from sleeping on the floor in the room of my brothers, while Dracula slept in my closet.
I am from “Let’s go see the chickens, Grandpa” and “Grandpa, I got your sword.”
“Nope, fake one!”
I am from Salamander hunting with aunts, uncles, and cousins.
I am from tractor and wagon rides, forts in the woods.
I am from “teeter, totter, bread and water, wash your face in dirty water”
I am from music in the basement and running from bats, but my uncle locked us in.
I am from having one Leader Dog for the Blind puppy-in-training after another.
I am from Marching Band: “To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late.”
I am from Youth Venture for Christ.
I am from Private College and Paloma.
I am from changing the major chosen in fourth grade.
I am from Cheer Hell. (I still hate that place.)
I am from Living in basements,
Living in attics,
Living in holes in old churches.
I am from the Post Bach program,
Where I found the love of my life.
I am from moving cross country and dating long distance.
I am from robbing Peter to pay Paul, hoping, it will all work out.
I am from…wondering what is next.

I was born and raised in Lapeer, Michigan. We took a family trip to Canada the summer before fourth grade, we went to Niagra Falls and Marine Land. It was there I fell in love with killer whales. I wanted to be a marine biologist from that day on! Sadly, as you can see, that is not the case. Chemistry and I had a disagreement when I went away to college. When I changed my major to literature, I knew I had done the right thing. The art of manipulating language to create a response in your reader, I am in awe. I hope to continue my own writing when graduate school is complete.

In 2001, I graduated from Graceland
University, in Lamoni, Iowa, with a Bachelor’s of English. I began substitute teaching back in Lapeer
that November, and two years later I had to quit substitute teaching to
take another job. One day my boss asked me to stand and supervise a
group of prospective sales representatives; they were role playing. My supervision duty felt a lot like being in the classroom. I cried that day;
I missed working with students so much. I made it my goal to get out of
this job and back in the classroom.

In 2003 I applied to Eastern Michigan
University’s Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification program. At
Eastern I took education classes and finished a minor in Psychology, I
even learned to swing dance!
I moved to Missouri in 2007 to teach high school English. Now I am a fourth year teacher teaching American Literature, Sophomore Literature, Composition and Research and AP Literature and Composition. |
One of my personal goals is to see
more of the world. So far I have traveled to San Juan, Washington, New
York City, New York, Maui, Hawaii, and Scotland. I even planned the
trip, where we stayed, what we visited, and how we could get the best
deals. My new goal is more US, Spain, London and Greece. Who am I
kidding, I just want to travel!

My room was the second from the top!
